Description
Woad Plug Plants Isatis tinctoria
Common names include dyer’s woad and glastum.
This striking biennial brings bold structure and a splash of summer colour to wildflower areas, cottage gardens, or heritage planting schemes. Woad forms a rosette of blue-green leaves in its first year, followed by tall branching stems topped with clouds of small, bright yellow flowers from May to July in its second year. These blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Renowned as an ancient dye plant, woad leaves have been used for centuries to produce a distinctive blue pigment prized in textile dyeing. Thriving in full sun and well-drained soils, it is ideal for dry borders, wildflower meadows, and low-fertility sites.
Our robust, healthy plug plants are grown in 40cc cell trays and are ready to be planted in their final position.
Sourced from native UK seed and grown locally, these plugs are perfect for introducing this historic and wildlife-friendly biennial into your garden or wild area.
We recommend planting 5-7 plugs per square metre in informal groups for a naturalistic effect.
