British Native Ribwort Plantain Plantago lanceolata
A resilient and highly valuable British native perennial wildflower, Ribwort Plantain is a cornerstone species for wildflower meadows, grasslands, and wildlife-friendly gardens across the UK. Rich in pollen, it is especially important for a wide range of pollinating insects, including bees, butterflies, and hoverflies, making it an essential plant for boosting biodiversity.
This low-growing, hardy and drought-tolerant species produces distinctive brown flower heads on slender stems from May through to September. The long flowering period provides a reliable food source for insects throughout the summer, while its seeds are also beneficial to birds and other wildlife.
Ribwort Plantain is a long-lived perennial, flowering from its second year and returning reliably year after year. It is well suited to poor or low-fertility soils, making it ideal for traditional hay meadows, conservation projects, rewilding schemes, and naturalistic gardens.
Best sown in spring (March–May) or early autumn, Ribwort Plantain establishes easily with minimal maintenance. As a true British native, it integrates beautifully into native meadow mixes and supports the wider ecosystem naturally.
