Lowland Calcareous Grassland Seed Mix
Our Lowland Calcareous Grassland Seed Mix has been developed to support the creation of Lowland Calcareous Grassland (g2a) for Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) habitat creation and restoration projects.
Formulated using a carefully selected combination of characteristic native grasses and calcicolous wildflowers associated with UK lowland calcareous grassland, this mix is suited to free-draining, lime-rich soils over chalk and limestone where it will establish a fine-textured, species-rich sward typical of this habitat. The grass component is based on the principal structural species of calcareous grassland, while the wildflowers have been selected to reflect the diversity of calcareous grassland communities, providing long-term ecological value, seasonal interest and important nectar and pollen resources for pollinating insects.
Designed to establish a resilient and species-rich grassland, the mix performs best under traditional low-input management, particular light grazing or low-intensity cutting. Final vegetation will depend on soil conditions, site history and ongoing management, with the best results achieved where soil fertility is kept low, nutrient inputs are avoided, and competition from more vigorous species is carefully managed during establishment.
Bespoke formulations are also available. Additional native species can be incorporated to suit specific site conditions, including shallow chalk, limestone, or drought-prone calcareous soils.
