Description
Yarrow Achillea millefolium
Common names include, thousand seal, old man's pepper, devil's nettle, and soldier's woundwort.
Yarrow is widespread throughout the UK in meadows, pastures, hedgerows and grassy banks. It thrives in most soil types and grows to around 50cm in height. This strongly scented perennial has flat-topped clusters of flowers that appear from June to November. It is drought tolerant and tolerates close mowing.
Yarrow was traditionally used as a charm against illness and bad luck.
The flowers of the yarrow are attractive to a wide variety of insects including ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings. It is one of the RHS Plants for Pollinators.
Sow in spring from March to May, or in autumn from August to October.
