Yarrow is a perennial wildflower widespread throughout the UK in meadows, hedgerows, pastures and grassy banks. It grows in any soil type and is drought tolerant and tolerant of close mowing. The flat-topped, scented, clusters of flowers appear from June to November.
Centuries ago, yarrow was used as a charm against illness and bad luck.
The flowers of yarrow are attractive to a wide variety of insects including ladybirds, hoverflies and lacewings. It features on the RHS Plants for Pollinators list.
Sow in spring from March to May, or in autumn from August to October.
