Micro White Clover Trifolium repens is a specially bred form of white clover with very small leaves and a compact growth habit, designed specifically for use in lawns. It blends seamlessly with fine grasses, creating a dense, green sward while offering the natural benefits of clover without the taller growth or frequent flowering of standard varieties.
As a legume, micro white clover fixes nitrogen from the air and shares it with surrounding grass, helping to keep lawns healthy and green while reducing the need for additional fertiliser. Once established, it is drought tolerant, resilient and effective at suppressing weeds by forming a tight, low growing ground cover.
Micro white clover should be sown between April and September and grows best on loam or sandy soils. It can be sown into an existing lawn or onto a prepared seedbed. For best results, it should be mown regularly, as frequent cutting encourages the plants to stay low, dense and fine leaved. Avoid overfeeding the lawn, as very rich soil can cause the clover to grow larger than intended.
Micro white clover tolerates low mowing heights and can be allowed to flower occasionally to support pollinators, or kept flower free by mowing before blooms appear. In colder winters, clover may die back temporarily, so it is best used as part of a grass and clover mix rather than as a stand alone lawn.
How to sow
Prepare the soil by removing weeds and loosening the surface. Firm the ground by treading lightly, then broadcast the seed evenly. Rake in gently and water well. During dry periods, watering may be needed until plants are established.
Use approximately 1.5g per square metre when sowing into an existing lawn, or 10g per square metre when sowing onto a bare seedbed.
Please note that although clover grows naturally in Britain, this seed is an agricultural variety and may be sourced from trusted growers overseas.
