Meadow Foxtail Grass | Alopecurus pratensis
Meadow foxtail occurs throughout the UK. It is most abundant in low lying areas, river valleys, wetlands or in old meadows on moist soils.
It is a loosely tufted perennial which grows to 1 metre tall, and is one of the earliest growing grasses in the spring and remains green throughout the year. Meadow Foxtail is very nutritious and palatable to livestock. It is useful as a hay crop.
Meadow foxtail is the food plant of the caterpillars of the Essex skipper butterfly.
