Columbine Plug Plants Aquilegia vulgaris

Common names include common columbine, and granny’s bonnet.

A graceful, early-flowering perennial with delicate, nodding flowers in shades of deep violet-blue to purple, appearing from May to July. The blooms are highly attractive to long-tongued bumblebees and other pollinators, making them an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens and meadow edges. Its fern-like foliage adds texture and interest even after flowering.

Columbine prefers moist, well-drained soils in sun or partial shade and will happily self-seed in cottage gardens, woodland edges, and wildflower borders. This hardy species brings natural elegance and a long season of interest to any planting scheme.

Our strong, healthy plug plants are grown in 40cc cell trays and ready for planting straight into their final position.

Sourced from UK-grown native stock, these plugs offer a reliable way to establish columbine where seed germination may be slow or uneven.

We recommend planting 5–7 plugs per square metre in groups for a soft, naturalistic effect.
