Clover Seed Blend is a mix of white, red, crimson and wild white clover, designed for improving soil fertility and supporting pollinators in wildflower areas, allotments and garden beds. The plants form dense growth that helps suppress weeds while protecting the soil surface. Once established, the blend is drought tolerant and grows well on loam and sandy soils.
As legumes, clovers fix nitrogen from the air in nodules on their roots. This nitrogen is gradually released back into the soil, improving both soil fertility and structure. The blend is highly effective when grown as a green manure and can be used on bare soil or in rotation before nutrient demanding crops.
Clover Seed Blend should be sown between April and September. Growing time ranges from a few months to long term, depending on how it is managed. Due to the height of red and crimson clovers, this blend is best suited to wildflower areas rather than lawns.
How to sow
Prepare the soil by digging it over and removing weeds. Firm the surface by treading lightly, then broadcast the seed evenly. Rake in gently and water well. In dry periods, watering may be needed until plants are well established.
Use approximately 10g per square metre when sowing onto a bare seedbed. Overseeding into grass is not recommended for regularly mown lawns.
Maintenance as a green manure
Cut the clover down before flowering while stems are still soft, as this allows quicker decomposition. Dig the material into the top 15cm of soil, where earthworms will help incorporate the organic matter and release stored nitrogen.
To sow as a pollinator-friendly wildflower
This clover blend produces a rich and varied nectar source for bees and other pollinating insects. Crimson clover flowers early and abundantly, while red and white clovers provide longer term forage. To support pollinators, allow plants to flower and avoid frequent cutting. Crimson clover is an annual and will flower and set seed in its first season, while the other clovers can return in following years if left undisturbed.
Please note that while clover grows naturally in Britain, this seed blend contains agricultural varieties which may be sourced from trusted growers overseas.
