Wild Privet | Ligustrum vulgare

Wild privet is a semi-evergreen shrub commonly found in hedgerows, woodlands, and scrub across England, Wales, and southern Scotland. It typically reaches heights of up to 4 metres and thrives in well-drained calcareous soils, making it suitable for a variety of settings, including coastal and exposed sites.

In summer, wild privet produces fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies, while its matt-black berries, which ripen in autumn, provide food for birds like thrushes. However, these berries are highly toxic to humans.

This shrub is popular for garden hedges due to its dense, bushy habit, which offers excellent cover for small birds and other wildlife. Pruning can be done throughout the summer, but it’s best to stop in late summer to prevent frost damage to new growth. Overall, wild privet is a valuable plant for both gardens and natural habitats, supporting a diverse range of wildlife.

Our wild privet whips are grown in the UK from UK origin seed.
