Crab Apple | Malus sylvestris

For a single row of hedging, you will need 4 plants per metre; for a double row of hedging, you will need 6 plants per metre.

This is a small native deciduous tree of woods and hedges.  Crab apples are hardy and attractive with pinkish white blossom between the months of March and May, and autumn fruits from September to November, making it a tree of year-round interest.

Crab apples are tolerant of most soil types and grow by about 20 – 40cm per year.  When mature, they will grow to about 10 metres in height.

The small fruits of crab apple trees are a valuable source of food for various wildlife including birds, deer and small mammals.  Their blossom is attractive to bees and other pollinators and crab apples are useful in an orchard setting where they serve as excellent pollinators for other apple and fruit tree varieties.

Prune established trees in late winter or early spring while dormant.

Our crab apple whips are grown in the UK from UK origin seed.
