Description
Buckthorn | Rhamnus cathartica
For a single row of hedging, you will need 4 plants per metre; for a double row of hedging, you will need 6 plants per metre.
This is a small, thorny tree native to England and Wales. When mature, it can grow to a height of 10 metres. It is hardy and grows well in most soils in sun and in shade.
Buckthorn has glossy dark green leaves and branches with thorns. Its small flowers provide pollen and nectar for insects in the spring and its purple-black berries appear in the autumn.
Buckthorn creates a dense hedge making it a valuable nesting site for birds.
Our buckthorn whips are grown in the UK from UK origin seed.
