Wild Cherry | Prunus avium

Also known as sweet cherry or bird cherry

For a single row of hedging, you will need 4 plants per metre; for a double row of hedging, you will need 6 plants per metre.

A popular ornamental tree for gardeners, pretty wild cherry has beautiful blossoms in the spring and a surfeit of bright red fruits in the summer/autumn, when its leaves fade from green to orange and deep crimson.

Wild cherries are native throughout the UK and grow best in full sunlight and fertile soil.  The mature trees can grow to 30 metres in height.

It’s also a great tree for wildlife, with spring flowers providing an early source of pollen and nectar for bees, and cherries providing food for a wide range of birds including blackbirds and thrushes as well as mammals such as badgers and wood mice.  The foliage of the wild cherry is the main food plant for caterpillars of many species of moth.

Our wild cherry whips are grown in the UK from UK origin seed.
